ISET 2016 Highlights Occupational Hazards of Being an Interventionalist, Time for a Safer Cath Lab

This month, at the International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy (ISET), interventionalists from several specialties got together for a special session entitled “Managing the Lifetime Risk of Being an Interventionalist.” The session, which some called “depressing,” highlighted the serious risks plaguing interventionalists and their staff. These include brain tumors, cataracts, and orthopedic injury among others.

Successful PCI of RCA Total Occlusion with Robotic Assistance and Right Radial Access

In this case, Dr. Cindy Grines treated a 62 year old female patient for a total occlusion of the proximal right coronary artery (RCA) using the CorPath Vascular Robotic System. This case demonstrates the complexity of cases that can be treated with robotic-assistance. In this long, complex case Dr. Grines was able to reduce her radiation exposure and orthopedic strain by sitting in the comfort of the radiation shielded cockpit.

Cath Lab Digest Spotlight: The Catheterization Laboratory at Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast

In last month’s issue of Cath Lab Digest, Carolinas Healthcare System NorthEast was the featured cath lab. The lab at CMC NorthEast is an innovator in the adoption of new technologies, including having one of the foremost robotics programs in the country. The physicians and staff have built a team approach to robotic-assisted PCI which has allowed the staff to enhance their skills as well as providing protection from occupational hazards for the entire team through radiation safety initiatives.

CorPath Highlighted at the Cardiovascular Research Technologies (CRT) Conference

Just this week, we participated in the annual CRT conference in Washington, DC. During the course, CorPath was featured in several talks on building robotic programs and the future of the cath lab, as well as during hands-on demonstrations with a live simulator in the exhibit hall. As data on the occupational hazards in the cath lab continues to mount, physicians are seeing the strong value of robotic-assisted PCI with regard to the potential to improve safety in the cath lab.
